Electric vs Gas Golf Carts: Which One is Right for You?
Electric golf carts feature zero emissions and whisper-quiet operation. It's also low-maintenance with fewer moving parts that could wear out or break down. You'll only spend around $0.02-$0.05 per mile on electricity compared to $0.10-$0.15 per mile on gas models. However, they'll need a battery replacement every 4 to 6 years, which could cost around $800-$1,500.
Electric carts provide instant torque for quick acceleration and can handle most terrain, but may struggle on steep hills or when heavily loaded compared to their gas counterparts.
Gas-powered golf carts are more powerful and could run 100-180 miles on a single tank compared to 20-30 miles per charge for standard electric models. They perform better on challenging terrain, including steep hills and rough paths. Refueling only takes a few minutes versus the 4-8 hours needed to recharge electric cart batteries.
However, gas carts produce emissions, generate engine noise, and require more frequent maintenance. You'll need to do routine oil changes, air filter replacements, and spark plug service every 3-6 months, depending on usage patterns.
Are Golf Carts Street Legal?
Standard golf carts are not automatically street legal in most jurisdictions, including Florida. However, golf carts can become street legal when properly equipped and registered as Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) or Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs). Florida law makes a clear distinction between standard golf carts and street-legal vehicles through several statutes: Florida Statute 316.212 specifically governs golf cart operation on public roads and establishes that unmodified golf carts cannot be operated on public streets except in designated areas, while Florida Statute 320.01(22) defines street-legal Low-Speed Vehicles as "any four-wheeled vehicle whose top speed is greater than 20 miles per hour, but not greater than 25 miles per hour."
At the federal level, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) establishes Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500 (FMVSS 500). This outlines the specific equipment requirements for LSVs, including safety features like seat belts, lights, mirrors, and windshields that must be installed before a golf cart can legally operate on public roads.
Hear it from our happy clients!
"After visiting three dealerships, I knew Ocala Golf Cart was different from the moment I walked in. Their sales team took the time to understand exactly how I planned to use my cart rather than just pushing the most expensive model. Mike guided me through all the options for my Club Car Onward, and I ended up with exactly what I needed for our community. The street-legal conversion was completed professionally and on time. Six months later, my wife and I use our cart daily for errands around town, and it still runs like new. The follow-up service has been equally impressive. Best purchase decision we've made in years!"
"When my 3-year-old Yamaha suddenly stopped holding a charge, I was worried I'd need an expensive battery replacement. The service team at Ocala Golf Cart diagnosed the real issue right away—a faulty controller. They fixed it within 24 hours, and provided me with a courtesy cart while mine was being fixed.
Their technicians explained everything clearly without the technical jargon, and the final bill was actually less than the estimate. My cart now runs better than when I first bought it! I won't take my golf cart anywhere else for service."
"We needed six golf carts for a large family reunion at our property, and Ocala Golf Cart delivered exactly what they promised. The rental carts were spotlessly clean, fully charged, and equipped with the upgraded seats we requested. When an unexpected rain shower hit during our event, the canopies kept everyone dry. The delivery team gave us a quick tutorial on operation and safety features, and even accommodated our last-minute request for an additional cart. The reasonable pricing and hassle-free return process made the whole experience absolutely painless. I'll definitely be calling them again for our next event!"
